Every Thanksgiving, you sit on your couch in front of the big
screen and watch giant floats parade through Times Square.
Sometimes you imagine you’re there, standing on the sidewalks of New York City watching
the parade. This Thanksgiving don’t just imagine being there. Join NYCTrip.com and
see the 2011 Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade in person, from your choice of a variety of parade
viewing areas.
This year will be one of the most memorable times to watch the parade
live because it’s the last year the parade will travel down 7th Avenue through Times Square. Next year, the route will travel down 6th Avenue
instead of 7th. Come experience one of the largest and most famous
Thanksgiving Day parades during the last year of its tradition - a much loved,
famous route.
Below we’ve listed
some fun facts about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for you to enjoy before scheduling your trip to the Big Apple.
- The
first parade, which took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1924, was called the
“Macy’s Christmas Day Parade”.
- Lions,
tigers, and bears walked the parade in 1925 and 1926, but they were taken
out because many children were frightened of them.
- The
famous giant helium balloons featured in the parade were initiated into
the parade in 1927. Felix the Cat and a Toy Solider were among the first
balloon floats.
- The U.S.
government is the largest consumer of helium. Guess who the second largest
consumer is? Macy’s!
